3 Ways To Sanely Juggle Multiple Jobs

By Danielle Wirsansky on July 6, 2016

Many students consider the summer the ideal time to relax. No school, no worries. They can let the stress melt off them in the hot summer sun. But for others, with no school, it is the perfect time to get a job. It can often be too difficult to juggle school work and a working job at the same time, but we all need to make money.

Summer ends up being the perfect time to cash in and make as much dough as possible. And many students even end up taking on multiple jobs (anything to lessen the mountainous pile of student debt, amirite?). It can be crazy trying to manage multiple jobs at once, but it is certainly possible. Read on to learn three ways that you can sanely juggle multiple jobs yourself!

Stay organized.

It will be extremely difficult to keep track of where and when you are supposed to be and exactly what you are supposed to do if you do not stay organized.  Getting fired for missing shifts or not doing the work you need to be doing can feel awful, so to avoid any of that and to keep making the most moolah that you can, you must stay organized!

If you do not have a calendar of any kind, I recommend getting one. Do what works best for you whether that is a paper planner or the calendar app on your phone. Just make sure that you are able to bring it with you wherever you go so that you are prepared for any circumstance. You get a sudden call asking you to take on another shift? You have your planner at the ready to make sure that it does not overlap with a shift at your other jobs. Been planning to go to a festival? Make sure you do not forget about it and schedule yourself to work over it.

You should also write your tasks down. That way when you think you are done for the day, you can double check that you did not miss any important things that you were supposed to do that could get you into trouble the next day.

When you have multiple jobs, it is better to just write it down as it can be a lot to keep track of. You can also make sure that your paychecks accurately reflect the hours you have been working. Sometimes there might be a mistake in the way your hours are reported, so you should check your paychecks very carefully and you can go back to your planner to make sure your hours are reflected accurately. You might not need it, but it is always better to be safe than sorry, right?

Work only at work.

Sometimes once we leave work, it can be hard to turn our work brains off. You might still be thinking about a problem you have been trying to solve at work or an issue you had with a customer or coworker. You might be constantly checking your email and responding to work queries even when you are off shift. It can take over your life outside of work — and you will not be paid for the time that you are putting towards it.

When you work multiple jobs, you have hardly any free time as it is. Do not let work intrude on the seldom time you have off. When you are at work, put all your effort into working. But when you are not at work, then that is it. Block your mind from thinking about it. Do not check your emails or respond to them. Your time is your time. Do not let work overtake you or you will get burnt out.

Find time for you.

Continuing where I left off in my last tip, you have to take time for yourself. Yes, you have a lot of responsibility on you as a new and burgeoning adult. You have got bills to pay and mouths (your own) to feed. You might need to work as much as possible during the summer to wring out every last dollar that you can. And that is fine and great and grand for you and you should be proud of yourself for handling and maintaining multiple jobs successfully at once. But do you want to go back into the school semester run down and stressed? Do you want to miss out on everything going on during the summer?

No! You deserve the time and chance to take care of yourself. So with your handy, dandy planner that you will have on you at all times, make sure that you pencil in some time to do what you love to do. It does not have to be a lot of time and it does not have to be every day, but make sure you give yourself some time to recharge and relax and do what you love to do too.
