The Real Star of "Get Out"

By Ellie Drabnis on March 3, 2017

With rave reviews from critics and a just about perfect rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, the movie “Get Out,” which hit theaters on February 24, surely did something right.

To be very honest, I hate horror movies. I am a complete ‘scaredy cat’ and from the very beginning of seeing the trailers for “Get Out,” the last thing I wanted to do was see the movie. But, after some convincing and the promise that I wouldn’t get laughed at if I had to cry out of fear, my boyfriend convinced me to go.

So, there we went: to the theater. And, as the trailers were coming to a close, my fear about what I was about to see only tripled when I was wrong. There were points of the movie that made me jump up in my seat a little bit, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying the movie.

Now, I could go on about the great writing, cinematography, the talented actors, and/or all of that put together which made a great movie, but none of those are the reason that I now consider this movie a favorite of mine.

The real reason is as follows; if you’ve yet to see the movie, I recommend seeing it before proceeding to read on.

*WARNING: MAJOR (and rather detailed) SPOILERS AHEAD*

I adored “Get Out” because of the real star of the movie, which is the friendship between Chris and Rod.

Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya and Rod, played by Lil Rel Howery, are best friends. And, here’s where I need to dive into real spoiler territory: Chris is dating Rose (Allison Wilson). Since Chris is about to go away with Rose for a weekend, Rod is asked to take care of Chris’ dog while his friend is gone. Now, I know plenty of people who wouldn’t want to house-sit for their buddy let alone watch their dog. A pet of any species is a living and breathing thing, and taking care of one for even just a weekend is a great kindness that is very much appreciated by the pet’s owner.

Then, there’s the genuine worry that Rod has over Chris. He goes to the cops and sure, the cops don’t listen and call him crazy. But, then, Rod knows that he needs to do something since the authorities won’t help him. He needs to go out of his way and locate his missing friend.

But first, Rod makes one last call to Rose. He figures, ‘Okay, she’s my buddy’s girl and she might know where he is!’ But, Rose plays dumb and then tries to make a pass at Rod. In other words, she attempts to flirt with Rod. He’s not having that and straight up tells Rose that she is barking up the wrong tree. Sure, that might seem like the ‘right response,’ but some people out there can and will throw their friendship with someone away for the promise of sexual favors. Rod, however, doesn’t and continues to show how much of a true friend he is to Chris.

Finally, Rod goes out to find Chris. There’s no telling if he’ll get to him in time before Rose’s crazy family performs the ‘pseudo-immortality’ surgery on him by putting the highest bidder’s brain into Chris’ body. Chris manages to escape and avoid this but is nearly killed by Rose when Rod flashes the lights of his airport security vehicle and has come to his best friend’s rescue.

That is true friendship all around if I ever did see it. Again, this movie has so many phenomenal pieces, but the true friendship between Chris and Rod stole the show, in my opinion, and is just one of the many reasons to check out the film.
