Ways for Students to Get Political

By Ashley Paskill on December 3, 2017

In an era of political unrest and uncertainty, many college students are looking to have their voices heard and to make a difference. However, it can be intimidating and can feel like it is impossible to make a difference. Have no fear, though. There are several simple ways to make a difference politically.

1. Vote, even in small elections.

While many think that only the Presidential elections matter, small, local elections can make a huge difference. These elections are the ones that often launch political careers of people working their way up to the higher levels. Many times, these elections include school board elections, which help our future generations learn. Changes brought about on a local level can trigger change on bigger levels of government.

2. Join a political club on campus.

Most campuses have a variety of political organizations on campus. There may be a general political science club or even organizations based on political party. These clubs offer ways for students to get involved politically and teach them how to get their voices heard at various levels of government. They also offer a place for students to safely express themselves in a civil and respectful manner while learning about various opinions.

3. Contact your representatives.

In the age of technology, it is easier than ever to get in contact with politicians. Calling them is still an option. Also, many politicians have email addresses that allow constituents to send mail to those in office. A lot of politicians are on social media, so contacting them there is an option. For those who love texting, text “Resist” to 50409. The “Resistbot” will look up your address and will help you contact your politicians, all while texting.

4. Blog or write about your thoughts.

The internet has a wide variety of options for allowing people to get their voices out, such as online publications that allow for an open forum for people to publish content of their choosing without being censored. Blogging is a popular way for people to voice their opinions, whether it is on a specific political topic or on politics in general. Writing letters to the editor of newspapers is also a way for everyday citizens to allow their voices to be heard.

5. Take a political science class.

Taking a political science class is a great way to learn about various levels and forms of government. Knowing how government works and how people get elected into office allows citizens to help make more of a difference and know what they need in order to run for office themselves. Also, a class can help citizens be informed if they decide to contact their politicians or write about a specific branch of government or issue.
