3 Important Goals to Set for 2018

By Ellie Drabnis on January 5, 2018

It’s so easy for everyone to talk about their New Year’s Resolutions and, then they never act on them.

But, maybe you don’t have to decide on unreachable goals for yourself. Do what you are able to within your own means; especially since you don’t have to answer to anyone but yourself about it. Instead, set these goals for 2018:

Leave that negativity in the past, bring positivity into the New Year.

1. Leave Negative Influences in The Past

Sure, we can’t necessarily leave those negative family members of ours in the ruins of the past year but, we can cut off fairweather friends and so-called friends who are not worth the trouble.

Cutting ties might seem difficult but, if they only bring negativity to you, are only using you whenever they need something and just dampen your mood overall, it is better to move on without them.

You do not have to explain why you don’t want to speak to them anymore. Just a simple unfriend on social media as well as blocking them on other social media sites and blocking their number should be enough. You might get accused of ‘ghosting’ them but, your mental health is a priority which surpasses holding onto the bad friendship that has caused you pain.

A way to deal with negative family members assuming you have to and would create an issue if you deleted them off of social media is to go on your Facebook and set them to the friend group “Restricted.” This will prevent them from seeing your posts that are not public. That way, you can avoid your relatives comment rude and harmful things all over your page. As far as other social media sites (Instagram, Twitter, etc…) you might be able to get away with simply blocking them all together.

2. Learn to say No.

This is something so many people forget about: You are completely able to say no, whenever you’d like.

People who are important to you and truly care for you will understand. We all have tasks that we need to complete be they for school, work or even just keeping the house or apartment that we live in clean and functioning.

You simply cannot drop everything that you need to do for yourself in order to go and help someone else. If you’re doing this for your child, it’s understandable. But, if your homegirl or one of your buddies is asking you to come help rearrange some shelves or something, it can wait.

Explain that you will help them later. Your friend or loved one will understand.

This goal for 2018 goes hand in hand with taking care of yourself a little bit more. Completing your personal tasks allows you to have peace of mind.

Seriously, give yourself a break.

3. Cut yourself some slack.

One more time: cut yourself some slack.

This goal of 2018 is rooted in the fact that, we are not superheroes with the ability to complete every task at the moment it comes to mind. Completing your to-do list at lightning speed isn’t possible unless you’re The Flash.

Do not rush yourself. The fact that you are getting up in the morning and doing your best to thrive within your goals shows that you have good intentions. You are on your way to succeeding, just keep at it.

I am guilty of being my own worst critic and focusing on the one negative about a day or smaller situation and continuing to beat myself up about it. Everyone has off days and none of us are perfect.

Allow yourself to be human.

No matter what your other goals for 2018 might be, take these possible goals for 2018 with you. Happy 2018, everyone!
