Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Philadelphia in 2018

By Ashley Paskill on March 10, 2018

Whether you are Irish or not, St. Patrick’s Day is a fun day to celebrate all things Irish! Philadelphia has no shortage of things to do. From history like the Revolutionary War to bar crawls and pubs, the city offers something for everyone who wants to join in on the fun. Since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate.

1. Attend Philly’s St. Patrick’s Day parade

Every year, Philadelphia holds its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Philadelphia’s parade is the second oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade, the oldest being New York City’s parade. This event celebrates all things Irish in Philadelphia with music, dancing, and much more. This year, it is being held on Sunday, March 11. The parade route can be found on their website, but if you are unable to be there in person, they are airing it on Fox at noon.

2. Participate in the Erin Express

This annual (and free) event is a huge hit each year. Participants hop on and off buses and grab drinks at participating bars in the city. The buses will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. this year. While you have to pay for the drinks at the bars, the buses are free. The buses stop at each location every 15 minutes, depending on traffic. A complete list of participating bars can be found on the event’s website. Only those who are 21+ can participate.

3. Go to the Museum of the American Revolution.

According to Music Choice, more than half of the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War had Irish ancestors. While the museum does not specifically focus on that aspect, it is an impressive museum. It contains little-known facts, artifacts from the War, and interactive displays. It even has George Washington’s war tent. The museum is inspiring and looks at the war from a variety of angles. Admission to the museum for students is $17 with valid ID.

4. Eat at one of Philadelphia’s many Irish pubs.

From Plough and the Stars to Con Murphy’s, there is no shortage of traditional Irish food in the city of Philadelphia. These places offer an authentic pub feel and taste right in the city. They often play Irish music to set the mood and are set up like pubs in Ireland are. To find one that suits you and what you want, look up the locations and menus online. If you plan on eating at one of these pubs on St. Patrick’s Day, make your reservation as soon as possible to guarantee a table as they fill up quickly.
