What are some good, cheap, but reliable airlines people use to fly to and from school? What were your experiences with these airlines?

My favorite airlines are Southwest and JetBlue. Southwest has a ton of pop-up sales, making it cheap to fly. Both airlines are reliable and comfortable. One airline I would recommend against is Frontier. Though their prices are low, they charge you for everything, from your carry-on bag to reserve your seat. Their customer service also isn't up to par.
I usually fly United and I haven't had any negative experiences so far. Because I've stuck to the same airline for all of my flights to and from school, I've started building up points that I can use to book free flights in the future. I'd recommend finding one airline that you like and sticking to it, rather than switching around, just because that'll allow you to take advantage of the membership benefits that they offer. You can also find deals for cheap flights on major airlines on websites like https://www.studentuniverse.com. I'd recommend looking for deals this way, rather than using a budget airline, as they tend to tack on a lot of extra charges that you might not be anticipating (for luggage, for instance).
Because I fly mostly internationally (to Europe), most of my experiences are with Delta/Virgin Airlines and American Airlines. If you're looking for cheap, but generally reliable airlines, I would go with American. It doesn't always have the best looking planes or poshest service, but I haven't had a bad experience yet. I had a really nice experience with Delta/Virgin as their planes are usually nicer and have more amenities. If you're ever looking to fly cheaply around places internationally, definitely check out RyanAir and Norwegian. They're usually no frills, but can get you almost anywhere for almost no money.
I always go with Southwest!! They don't have hidden fees, let you cancel and book a different flight if needed, and are relatively affordable (during school breaks it's not the cheapest, but it's still better than some).
When I flew to Washington D.C. for a conference, I decided to try out cheaper airlines like Frontier and was very disappointed. I had to pay to PICK A SEAT, had to pay for a water cup, had to pay for hand luggage, and also for my suitcase. With all the hidden fees, it ended up being more than Southwest would have been.
It's important to do your research on the airlines to see what the price includes. I will never again book without researching!!
