What is considered appropriate roommate contact prior to move-in day? I don't want to be overbearing!

I messaged my roommates on Facebook to say hey and to determine who was going to bring what. We had some basic chit chat conversations, but I tried not to get too in depth over a device. Save some small talk for the first meeting!
Message them on Facebook or send them an email. First, I would stick with textual communication because in our generation, calling each other can seem a little too forward. Since you will both be living together, you should get to know each other and grow comfortable with each other, so be straight up with them. Ask them how they would like to communicate before move-in. Maybe set a day where you go out and buy things for your dorm room together if they live closeby.
I would reach out to your roommate over Facebook to divide up the communal items that you are bringing. If they live in the same area as you, suggest getting coffee or something so that you can meet him/her.
If you were paired up with your roommate by your school/campus housing, they will most likely have given you your roommate's school email. Shooting them an email is your safest bet as it doesn't look like you spent the past hour or two looking them up on every social media platform possible. If you're lucky, your roommate will respond and hopefully provide you with a phone number or ask to add you on Facebook for easier communication. It's a good idea to discuss when you both are planning to move-in and what you are planning on bringing in order to account for the space you do or don't have. It also doesn't hurt to introduce yourself personally and get to know each other prior to move-in. However, if they don't initiate conversation or put in effort to keep the conversation going, don't be discouraged - you have the rest of the year to get to know them in person.
